Kevin L. Erwin, a globally recognized ecosystem ecologist, specializes in large-scale ecological restoration, biodiversity conservation, and watershed management, addressing the functional capacity of watersheds and mitigating climate change impacts. Since 1974, Kevin has managed and monitored hundreds of projects worldwide, pioneering wetland restoration and ecological engineering.

Kevin has served as the president and principal ecologist at Kevin L. Erwin Consulting Ecologist, Inc. since 1980, and serves on the Graduate Faculty, The Water School, at Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU). Certified as a Senior Ecologist by the Ecological Society of America (1985) and a Professional Wetland Scientist by the Society of Wetland Scientists (1984), Kevin is considered an international authority, troubleshooting for UN agencies, testifying in international courts and tribunals.

Key projects include international wetland restoration and climate change mitigation initiatives in Canada, China and West Africa, mega-watershed projects in Florida, and biodiversity efforts in Malaysia. He has led initiatives for FGCU, designed wetland mitigation banks, coordinated coastal restoration in thirteen nations following the 2004 tsunami. and contributed to the recently published U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s 2011-2016 National Wetland Condition Assessment.

Kevin initiated a water resource restoration program in China in 2014, involving mentoring, lecturing, and ecological planning and design. Currently, he leads a research initiative in the Everglades, studying biodiversity, periphyton, and water quality.

Recognitions include the Erwin Environmental Ecology Collection at FGCU, Southwest Florida Community Foundation’s Trustee Emeritus distinction in 2020, and serving as President of the Society of Ecological Restoration’s Large-scale Ecosystem Restoration Section (LERS) Board 2023-2026..
